Badly beaten and on the run after the hostile takeover of Hell, Brian, the exiled former ruler of the underworld, takes refuge in backwater corners of Creation. Abandoned and broken after witnessing the sacrificial and heroic final stand of his last true friend, Brian finds what maybe a new route to redemption in the most unlikely of places, despite his own doubts. While Brian finds his way, or his way finds him, other players are moved and positioned according to someone else's precise and dark designs. Roubideaux, a southern lawyer who has been dead for over a century is finally lured out into the world of the living and unbeknownst to him, he may hold the secret to supreme demonic power. Uriel, the one-winged, ex-apprentice to Gabriel the Archangel, staggers back to the Gates of Heaven to deliver first hand news of a dangerous cosmic power struggle, only to find that an audience with God is by appointment only and she didn't call ahead. Hecate Selene, the former Queen of Hell, tries to recruit others to her cause as she comes face to face with past sins, when all she really wants is to be reunited with the half succubus child she abandoned, though she says she's unselfishly trying to save the world. Even Epicurus, Lucifer's one-time, hand-picked successor, returns from a quiet existence on the dark fringes of the universe to meddle in the fates of just about everybody. But with so many of Hell's heavy hitters, past and present, playing all of their cards so close to the vest, all Brian wants is to rescue Gabriel, the one who saved him when both Heaven and Hell clamored for his damnation for no reason other than he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Along the way, Brian must decide who are allies and who are foes among all the hungry demons, prideful angels, voodoo priestesses, devil worshipping city coroners, Nephilim, and out of work Valkyries he meets. His situation worsens as morally conflicted Blupox, former soul harvester, broods and sadistic Mephistopheles, perhaps the most vicious of all demon lords, solidifies his position as the latest monarch of Hell, bent on eliminating all possible threats to his newly claimed throne.
