A 17th century New World merchant is torn from his family and the life he'd built by the judgement of the Inquisition. Sentenced to serve his penance on a slave galley, a battle with privateers leaves Juan de Castro, and his fellow slaves and their captors, shipwrecked on a sinister, uncharted island where the stars are wrong and the full moon never changes. Soon they come under attack by supernatural forces, the undead priesthood of Camazotz, the Mayan bat god of sacrifice, murder and the night. Slaves and soldiers must set aside their differences to survive the terrors of the island, and they must work together to uncover the dark secret at its heart, if they are ever to see home again.
