The Town America Forgot

President Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation, which granted freedom to slaves in Confederate states, on New Year’s Day in 1863. Word didn’t reach Negro slaves in Galveston, Texas, until June 19, 1865. Oddly, news of the presidential decree reached every Texas town within six months of the president’s speech. However, many authorities on the subject suspect Texas slaveholders, aware of the proclamation, simply chose not to free slaves until they were forced to. What historians do not know is that one such Texas town seceded from the Union two months prior to the arrival of Union troops in Galveston. For Negros in the town of Bison Creek, Texas, the transition from slavery to freedom was, in many ways, far worse than the reality of slavery. This is the story of the town that Texas forgot and the survivors who were left behind after its sudden, inexplicable demise.
