The Song Dynasty, we were told by so many, was the weakest dynasty for an united China. Pressured by strong foes in the north and the west, its size was the smallest and though it kept a large standing army,, it could hardly defend itself against invaders, real and potential and had to rely on buying them off with lavish goods and concessions. But was this really the true Song dynasty. Recent historians had taken a very different view and had to a large extent overturned previous convictions that the Song had nothing we could be proud of. Instead, it was an empire with flourishing trade and arts, brillant in literature and yes, even women' s "rights". The Song Dynasty was in fact the one period most suitable to live in among the many more "loud" eras. Of course, it had its own problems and there was no lack of heros and heroines, even tragic ones. These tales, from history and legends, will take you back to that much distorted period and may present to you a very different Song from previous judgments.
