The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

How close is the tension between man and the supernatural to being resolved? Alas, Washington Irving's 1819–20 short novella, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, explores this concept. Ichabod Crane, the protagonist, a Yankee schoolmaster, lives in Sleepy Hollow, a Dutch colony on the Hudson River. Crane is easily swayed by ghost and witchcraft tales. He's fascinated by the local legend of a headless horseman. Crane is a mercenary who courts Katrina Van Tassel for her inheritance. Abraham Van Brunt (sometimes called Brom Bones) is Crane's envious competitor and a hasty horseman who constantly plays pranks on him. But then a headless horseman frightens Ichabod Crane as he goes home from a party by Katrina. That was real. The ghost chases him and throws a pumpkin he mistook for a head. The schoolmaster then leaves Sleepy Hollow for good. Background:Headless horsemen were common in Northern European folklore, appearing in German, Irish, Scandinavian, and British traditions. They appeared in Robert Burns' Scots lyric "Tam o' Shanter" (1790) and Bürger's Der Wilde Jäger, which was translated as The Wild Huntsman (1796). One of Washington Irving's most anthologized, researched, and adapted sketches is "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." The narrative was the longest in The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. (1819-53), which Irving serialized during 1819 and 1820."A destiny already in the ink.""Destinyalready Creative Writing Ink" takes all reasonable efforts to protect the book's original integrity.
