"... And the night hissed” is a grim tale of a clash of cultures. It recounts the experiences of a British physician, Dr. Reginald Cromwell, in 19th century West Africa while on a slave expedition. His team finds itself in unfamiliar territory confronted with a dark Yoruba tale of snakes and retribution. As people disappeared mysteriously or died of unknown causes, the team's skepticism gave way to a deep-rooted fear. It was a bizarre predicament they faced and escape appeared impossible. Surely logic and mettle had to prevail here or they would all perish!'It was fixed on a wooden staff, like a totem, and stood at the same spot the chief had been shot the night before. There was an aura of mystery and premonition about it. While its cold, lifeless eyes admonished us for trespassing, they also advocated that we beat a hasty retreat. A warning we foolishly did not heed and its forked tongue, sticking out from a fanged mouth, seemed to mock our decision.'
