Victorian Belfast was one of many towns expanding into City status as the imposing Textile Mills drove the modest harbour settlement towards prosperity. Within the nightly pause, necessary for workers to regain some respite from exhaustion, local spooks were said to be unable or unwilling to leave their vigils. Occasional myths of Ghouls, only half way to ghostly mist, remained to taunt the fearful believers. This story concerns one such being who rose from a hidden depth of daily hibernation to wreak havoc in Belfast`s embracing hills and beleaguered backstreets. In subsequent eras each family would have a version of the tale of `The Galloper`, with emphasis to suit each particularly errant child at bedtime.
