The Heap (das Haufe) is both a love, war, and horror story, and an allegory of Germany from pre-World War I to the conclusion of World War II. In 1914, Germany is reluctantly drawn into a war it does not believe in but joins out of a strong sense of loyalty to its geopolitical relations and treaties with the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This war would have disastrous consequences for both. When Germany re-emerged, twenty years later, it was immediately apparent that it had become a monster. Ultimately this monster would be forced into a "final" confrontation the outcome of which was uncertain. Who, or what, would prevail? Whatever the outcome there was certain to be change. Would this change be for good or for ill in the world? What is to become of Germany? What is to become of us? What is this world coming to?
