Belle Lyman and her two children Jackson, 6, and Melody, 5, are invited to spend the summer in Maine at her college roommate's cabins on the lake. Belle and the children enjoy the lake until the one-armed man asks Jackson to help him find his arm; a handy man shows up and repairs the steps and replaces the light, and Belle gets lost in the fog on the lake while rowing. Marilyn, who had gone to college with her, tells her these things didn't happen. The people who helped her died years ago. Marie, Marilyn's friend, locks her in the abandoned and dusty church and a Sheriff who no longer lives, takes her out. Belle sees a body in the lake and calls the State Police. The body turns out to be a mannequin and everyone thinks Belle is having a nervous breakdown and playing tricks. Belle decides to go home early, but then Jackson is shaking her shoulder and telling her they would be late for school. She remembers nothing about Maine. Marilyn invites her for two weeks in Maine and Belle agrees.
