Twin sisters Autumn and Emily are starting a new life with their Auntie Pipple, who lives in an old trailer that teeters on the edge of a tall mountain. In every direction, there is an endless sea of forest that fills the night with terrible sounds. They try to ignore the sounds at first, but when Emily wakes up to an open window and sees Autumn is missing, she fears that whatever is out there has taken her. There is a girl named Violet who lives at the bottom of the tall mountain. She sits on a tire swing, wearing red mittens and cowboy boots. She warns Emily that there are dangerous monsters living in the forest, and the only way to save her sister is to hunt them down with the help of the strange man, Mister Crumb, who builds weird animatronics that dance on the edge of the forest. Emily isn’t sure she can trust Mister Crumb, and Violet seems like she might be hiding her own secrets, but time is running out if Emily wants to save her sister from the monsters in the woods.
