A book of ghost and horror stories, featuring very unpleasant objects and deeply distressing places. Certain places have something about them that defies description. I’m sure we have all visited somewhere unfamiliar and experienced a feeling that all is not quite right about the place, that something about the surroundings you find yourself in is slightly out of kilter – perhaps a shadowed corner in an otherwise brightly lit room, or maybe an inexplicable cold spot in a warm and cosy house.Sometimes it’s not the places that have unsettling feelings about them, but the frisson of unease comes from an object, a piece of furniture, an ornament, or maybe something as anodyne as a photograph. Just innocent objects? Perhaps not for the characters inhabiting these stories.
