A week after an Italian hotelier is brutally murdered at his resort in Negril, Jamaica, the decomposing body of a young man washes onto an adjacent beach on Christmas night. Two strangers, a boat captain and a local woman, have a chance encounter while viewing the body. For the skipper, the corpse rekindles previous encounters with people from his past, both living and dead. The woman is unmoved by the sight of the body but is concerned the spirits of both the Italian and the most recent corpse will haunt the local beaches as "duppies," the Patois word for ghosts. An unforeseen accident causes the pair to reacquaint themselves on Boxing Day (the U.K. holiday) after Christmas. From that point on the unlikely pair share their darkest secrets of lust, violence, love, deceit and kindred spirits.
