H. Rider Haggard wrote A Witch’s Head just before his most famous novel, King Solomon’s Mines. While not the critical success of that book, A Witch’s Head is a suspenseful tale set Victorian England following an orphan Ernest Kershaw who experiences strange happenings including the discovery of a woman’s head as he walks through a cemetery. An early pioneer of the lost world genre in literature Haggard’s novel is still considered a classic over a century after its first publication. Graham Greene, in an essay about Haggard, stated, "Enchantment is just what this writer exercised; he fixed pictures in our minds that thirty years have been unable to wear away.
