The Periscope appears to be dressed with all of the trimmings of the traditional English ghost story: a secluded country house, a roaring log fire in the common room, preparations for Christmas, and the first flakes of snow on the winter air. But this dark romance, which concerns an infuriated conductor’s attempts to reconcile an orchestra of children with professional discipline, observes the terrifying chaos which follows the collapse of adult authority. As darkness encroaches upon Joppa Grange, the conductor rages against the dying of the light. Civilisation must be kept aflame.
