From the Inside Flap

Feeling his way up the staircase with one hand on the handrail, the othergroping blindly in the darkness, and his feet testing each tread, oneemitted a loud creak. Joshua stopped cold and proceeded on only when surenothing had joined him for closer inspection. It was said that whenrock-climbing freehand, you should always have three points attached toground. He maintained such a grip, lest he fall and become a bait-ball of adifferent sort.He reached the top of the stairwell by the way the tread flattened into awide expanse.Again, that feeling of vulnerability. Always in t-shirt and shorts. Hereally should start taking to wearing jeans and long-sleeved shirts. Maybea suit of armor and nuclear weapons would be of some use amongst the fraythat was as dark as it was silent.Nothing seemed to exist here except for that*Skittery-scratch scratchy-scratch…*And even that was fading, getting smaller, as if the man in black wasrapidly moving away from him.Well, at least there was something positive coming out of this.Through this silence came a squeak.Joshua’s bladder let go.A patch of muted light, tinged a shade of green, fell into the upstairshallway at the far end. It was oblong in shape, the outline of an openeddoor. But what kind of light was burning behind it? Perhaps a green shadehad been hung around the globe to make it look that way.And what way was that?Sickly, like bile.Joshua didn’t dare breathe. So he stood there in his wet shorts, urinefreezing against his legs and in his shoes and socks.Something was moving along the hallway, toward that oblong patch. He couldmake out no more than an apparition that slowly swayed from side to side,as if a large wind-up toy was swaying from one robotic leg to the other andaway from him.Had Leon somehow snuck around him? He was certain that he hadn’t. Thenagain, his mind was chugging along like a wrecked train, all its passengersbloodied and dead; the apparition’s definition becoming increasingly clearas it moved closer to the light, to hold up directly before it.It was his friend, Sammy, and he maintained that shifting from one foot tothe other as if enchanted by what he saw beyond. His hair was a littledisheveled, his clothes as untidy as usual, his face a petrified mask andhighlighted in bile-green.And, for a very brief transition in time, Joshua thought he could hear thesound of clocks. He sharpened his senses so his ears hurt with strain, and all he got wasthe typical ringing that accompanied utter quietness, besides the gushingblood through his veins.Maybe it was nothing. Besides, it wasn’t important, was it?

About the Author

For me the fascination in the paranormal began when I was barely a teenager living in a house that supported more residents than the immediate family. It wasn't so bad whilst living amongst our unseen guests, however, I've never had a desire to return to the weekly, if not daily, surprises that came out of thin air. At least, not in *that* house with *those* guests. Using this fascination in conjunction with a wildly over-active imagination, I worked at slowly honing my skills, frequently getting myself into trouble for writing too 'flowery' in an academic field of health-related subjects. But the desire, the itch that wouldn't be denied, to take whomever was interested on an adventure of escapism increased to such an intensity it became an entity of its own which had to be let loose. The world has become a pressure cooker; if I can be a release-valve, and those who choose to go along for the ride come back in one piece and invigorated, albeit a little rattled, then it has been worth the risk. Having come from an allied health background, where I've assisted thousands over the decades to rediscover their physical selves, I now wish to transport people into a world where the question begs: *Just what is **reality?* For me, that reality - which can be seen and touched - begins at home with my three constant companions: Saffron, Cinnamon and Ginger. Yep - I've my very own spice girls in four-legged form. And they are great at hearing things shift in the dark hours of night when us humans are totally oblivious.
