The real mission of any good magician is simply this: to entertain as a means of distraction. If successful in this purpose, the magician enables something wonderful to happen for his audience, something hidden, something unseen, something profoundly powerful and transformative…indeed, something that changes things in unexpected ways, something that, when completely revealed, will bring lasting surprise and delight. The magician’s humble role in this eternal endeavor is simply to provide an effective cover, to capture the minds of his audience, to divert their attention elsewhere if only for a few meager moments, thereby enabling the true work to be completed in private, silently, invisibly. If need be he will act the fool, debase himself in any way necessary, become a buffoon, a clown, a laughing stock, because he sincerely cares more about the result, than about himself. That each audience member experiences something truly magical is critical. Nothing else is acceptable. So, come one, come all, I invite you to my little show. It often feels like I have so very little to offer but hopefully, at least, you will be amused and distracted for a time…and, during that time, who knows what else may be revealed?
