Leopold Lang, a soft-spoken boy from Virginia, comes to work as a banker’s assistant in the early 1920’s. The big city of Philadelphia is quite a change from his hometown of Luray, with busting streets and busy roads. His boss, Arthur rose, is a mysterious millionaire with a castle-like mansion east of the city, and never comes out during the daytime. Leo has only spoken to him over the phone, and now, he’s going to live with him, since his finances fell through for his apartment. On the long train ride from Virginia, he wonders if this will finally be the breakthrough he needs to work his way up the corporate ladder, to finally complete that sweet American dream his mother had always spoke of.
