The book follows an inquisitive and adventurous young girl named Max, as she explores the town of Yaroo, learning of sightings and stories of the beast from characters such as: Mr. Kerplunk, Doctor Sue Proctor, John Peter Nash, Dolores the Florist, and Mayor William C. Beyer. After hearing varied and contradicting stories, Max takes it upon herself to find the truth about Yaroo’s newest inhabitant.
