They want her. They need her. The problem is, can they trust her? A member of a covert government occult unit, Loreli Potts is part of a night assault mission against a deadly group of black magic practitioners known simply as the Cunning. Meticulously planned and carried out, nothing should have gone wrong. But when a rescue team enters the wrecked interior of the country manor house the following dawn, just three of the assault team are found alive, and only Loreli is still sane. Taken to a discreet private clinic to recover from her injuries, Loreli knows she is under intense investigation by senior members of the Clearing House. The foolproof operation had been a trap, and Loreli faces the prospect of being branded a traitor. The people she works for have a permanent way of dealing with betrayal. Her recuperation is interrupted by a visit from a woman she considers to be her closest and most trusted friend. Only close and trusted friends are not supposed to bring along a pair of heavily armed gunmen as travelling companions. She learns that the Clearing House has a major problem on its hands. Loreli would be among the first they would consider sending to deal with it. But with a cloud of suspicion hanging over her after the abortive assault, the higher echelons of her organisation now sit in judgement of her. Smuggled out of the clinic under armed guard, she is put in a car and driven away under close security. Her best friend is aloof and evasive, ignoring her demands to know where they are going, and Loreli's instincts tell her she is now in a life or death situation, not a new experience for her. With nothing to do but think, Loreli recalls previous missions where she faced dangers both human and supernatural, and as the hours pass with still no word of her fate, she begins to wonder what new threat is confronting the Clearing House to make them willing to trust her one more time. Or would her faceless, ruthless masters decide they could not take that risk?
