The stories collected here were all written between 1852 and 1904 by women who were not primarily writers of ghost stories. They are a small sample of the richness of female writing along the nineteenth century. They are not the most celebrated texts their authors wrote but the unpretentious way in which they explore the relationship between ghost apparitions, female oppression and women’s writing make them worthy of attention. The ghost stories included in this collection are: The Phantom Coach by Amelia B. Edwards The Open Door by Margaret Oliphant The Old Nurse's Story by Elizabeth Gaskell The Lady's Maid's Bell by Edith Wharton
