The End of Temperance Dare: A Novel

Haunting and atmospheric, The End of Temperance Dare is another thrilling page-turner from the author reviewers are calling the Queen of the Northern Gothic. When Eleanor Harper becomes the director of a renowned artists’ retreat, she knows nothing of Cliffside Manor’s dark past as a tuberculosis sanatorium, a “waiting room for death.” After years of covering murder and violence as a crime reporter, Eleanor hopes that being around artists and writers in this new job will be a peaceful retreat for her as much as for them. But from her first fog-filled moments on the manor’s grounds, Eleanor is seized by a sense of impending doom and realizes there’s more to the institution than its reputation of being a haven for creativity. After the arrival of the new fellows―including the intriguing, handsome photographer Richard Banks―she begins to suspect that her predecessor chose the group with a dangerous purpose in mind. As the chilling mysteries of Cliffside Manor unravel and the eerie sins of the past are exposed, Eleanor must fight to save the fellows―and herself―from sinister forces.

Publishers Weekly

“[In] this solid supernatural thriller…Webb succeeds in escalating suspense while keeping her story grounded, but goes full-on Exorcist for the finale.”

Booklist

“Webb’s (The Vanishing, 2014) fourth novel is a high-energy ride peppered with just the right amount of romance seeking, coffee drinking, and wine sipping.”

Minneapolis Star Tribune

“Tantalizing…[The End of Temperance Dare] could well be played on a Clue game board, with macabre crimes, inexplicable disappearances, and enough eerie suspense to drive one mad.”

SeattlePI

“The story creates an eerie feeling of impending danger, and keeps you reading with the lights on. If you enjoy tales of suspense and horror, you will find this a clever work. Webb takes you into the dark places and holds you spellbound with terror.”

The Big Thrill

“There’s an irresistible pull to a haunted-house story told well, and The End of Temperance Dare is told very well indeed.…The story takes place on the shores of Lake Superior, with very of-the-moment characters, while drawing potent atmosphere from the richly drawn location. As the plot tightens, the strange loveliness of the manor on the lake takes hold.”

Midwest Book Review

“A deftly crafted and consistently compelling novel by an author with a genuine flair for originality…Unreservedly recommended.”

San Francisco Book Review

“There were more than enough creepy moments, mysteries to solve, and even some romance thrown in…This book was perfect.”

Criminal Element

“Wendy Webb is a pro at providing all the trappings of a good Gothic mystery.…A fun read.”

The Parkersburg News and Sentinel

“With a creepy Gothic setting and some ghostly chills, this is a good spooky mystery…”

Gumshoe Review

“Chilling…”

Pioneer Press

“Spine-chilling…Wendy Webb does haunted houses better than just about anyone.”
