In Abuja, Bill Hodge is following up a lead on a prominent Nigerian politician; General Falana Babajide, who may be mixed up in smuggling or terrorism. After a social meeting with the General at a diplomatic event, Hodge is attacked by local muggers and discovers they were explicitly hired to kill him by an obinyo (white man) identified as a bearded man friendly with the politician. Having piqued Hodge’s attention with an attempted murder, scrutiny of the bearded man uncovers clandestine communications with two other men who appear entirely antithetical, in status, origins and religions to the bearded man. Tracing all three men to a meeting in Marrakech, Hodge falls into a world of unknown religious ritual, murder, violence and intrigue. Fleeing for his life, Hodge must resolve the threats and forces ranged against him to defeat the Darkside Organisation.
