Continuing in the spirit of “Older Now than Yesterday,” this collection of modern ghost stories returns to both the islands of Stockholm’s Archipelago and extends its range farther afield; all the way to picturesque Dalarna, the well-known “fairytale land” of central Sweden. Not only are these stories more far-ranging in location, but also in the nature of their inspirations. Every family has at least one dark story in their past that even their closest friends might not know about. Dalarna may have a folksy reputation by daylight, but what about at night in the thick snowbound woods that are off the beaten path? Traditions are something that we all share and are what can make celebrating major holidays memorable; some more than others. Finally, all of us occupy current time and space, which was once the same for others who lived in the past. Sometimes, the streams of both past and present cross over into one another, leading to a glimpse of those long-gone before us; often when we least expect it.If you tend to like your supernatural fiction on the “slash and scream” side of the genre, these stories are not that, but harken back more to their Gothic predecessors. Things go “bump in the night,” rather than bleed. The stories herein lay their tales out in a more measured pace, which, I think, leads them to being even more believable.
