Turn of the Screw and Daisy Miller

Mixing evil and innocence together in ways never before imagined, The Turn of the Screw is one of the most famous ghost stories of all time. A new governess comes to a remote English mansion to take care of two angelic children. She discovers that there are two evil phantoms in the house, and that the children may be possessed by them. As the boundary between imagination and reality becomes blurred, she begins to question her sanity. Henry James' relentlessly horrifying tale was first published in 1898. Daisy Miller, the second story on this tape, shows James's sharp eye for the absurdity of the social conventions of his time. An attractive young American woman traveling in Italy with her family is wooed by Frederick Forsyth Winterbourne, an American living abroad. But his suspicions about her friendship with an Italian man lead him, and the rest of society, to abandon her. Only after she dies does he realize that her actions were the result of her spontaneous and generous nature. First published in 1879, Daisy Miller was also made into a movie, starring Cybil Shepherd and Eileen Brennan, in 1974.
