The dive forward clipped my chin on the pavers and carried me under the path of the spear that scored a hole down the middle of the passage.That’s the problem with unguarded secret entrances. Eventually someone notices that an exit is an entrance and decides to discourage visitors. One moment it’s a wetly glossy blackened bronze door. The next the surface is melting like a sideways pool of water after the rock hits. Before you can adjust to the change, green pseudopods covered with chitinous spikes are leading a beak the size of a child’s head out of the pool of black water door.All your holes try to close at the same time while your head tries to outrun the feet that haven’t gotten any messages. When I caught up with myself I tried to turn and to run without any interval between the two and promptly over balanced. Then I fell on my face, arms windmilling. Who knows, maybe they thought since the legs weren’t doing the job they could put a hand in and help out.I bounced up off the turf, spat loam out, and darted towardsSylvie and Dugal like a schooner catching full sail. Sylvie’s eyes had gone wide, but she already had her sword half out and the other hand was completing a precise follow-­through. She’d underhanded that dagger of hers while I was faceplanting.My brain started clicking and I immediately tucked my sprint into a roll.It was not a good time to be an obstacle between missiles and the Deepspawn.
