As a winter front in Williamsville, New York dumps lake-effect snow into the streets, Rick Soblinski, a caretaker at Oak Leaf Retirement Home, trudges into work to find he has a new resident in his hall a Jane Doe abandoned in a sister facility located in the South Townes. The homes administration transferred the woman to Oak Leaf, the broader outfitted facility, because of her extreme condition: tumorlike growths cover her face, and she appears completely unresponsive to her environment. While attempting to care for his new charge, Rick is stifled by anxiety, overwhelmed by a flood of buried memories: past indiscretion and consequence. He determines that the womans maladies extend far beyond the surface. The experience manifests into a bizarre nightmare that bleeds into reality, changing everything. Allie, Ricks older girlfriend and alpha-businesswoman, copes with his erratic behavior; Oak Leafs Office Manager, Tony Delgado, is determined to find the disfigured womans family; and the administration of Oak Leaf Retirement Home endures a string of disappearances of both staff and patients alike. Multiple pathways converge to uncover the Jane Does origins and ultimate purpose.
