When the mutilated, eviscerated and partially eaten body of a burglar is found in an alleyway in Chilsett, a town on the River Severn in Shropshire, it begins the hunt for an ancient and unspeakably evil creature that has awoken from its latest dormant period. The creature has supreme physical attributes: strength, speed, hearing, and many other physical aspects are exceptional. To make things worse for the police and others trying to find and destroy it, it is also intelligent and cunning. Its use of darkness and shadows during its nocturnal hunts earns it the title The Shadow Seeker by the Press. As the killings continue and the fear and paranoia in the town increase, Noreen Davies goes to the police to tell them that she can help them to track the creature. An elderly widow, she has an inexplicable psychic link with the beast. Despite initial attempts to block out the visions, she cannot help but see and hear through its eyes and ears while it is hunting. When she realises that she cannot pull away from the horror that she is forced to witness, she decides that she would be of use to the police in their search for the beast. However, as armed policemen and soldiers are alerted of the creature’s movements and are guided towards it, the Shadow Seeker realises that something is wrong and nurtures the link, turning it against Noreen. The story ends in a bloody and climactic confrontation at Noreen’s house.
