The Dimming (The Dimming Saga Book 1)

Book 1 of The Dimming Saga, an epic tale of medieval survival set in an alternate world. Follow a young boy named Ohbin, royal twins Stilla and Pradton, and an old man named Gerter as they try to stop the plague of creatures that hunt nights that are 180 hours long. A unique setting is the backdrop for a tale of danger and death but also of hope and love. In Riverhold the sun moves just a degree an hour, slowly bringing the long night behind it. Every seven years with darkness comes death as the flessen return. Stalking the long nights, they seek the heat and light of their prey to satisfy their hunger. Fire is outlawed. This is known as The Dimming. This Dimming - the 66th - not only brings the flessen, but a deadlier creature, the morgen. A dire combination. Struggling to survive without fire, the people must live in the dim glow of the pale blue light from the glowlings, working to feed themselves and their lords. The battle to prosper by the Law of Holding is not only against the deadly creatures, but against each other and the force of nature itself. For most, following the traditional Law of Holding is enough. But for a few, change must come. They must put an end to the creatures, if only they can survive the Dimming to do it.

From the Inside Flap

From The Dimming:It was a different world to her young eyes. A world where light was scarce and very personal. Shadows were soft and though the movement of the flickering flames was gone it was replaced with abrupt flares of blue that faded in seconds only to return. Blue strobes for those stationary and a dim blue glow for those in motion."Papa?" Sylia said, as they walked in the darkness, no light of their own."Yes, Sylia," Kaspin replied."The light is so fuzzy. It's so dark.""It is dim for the Dimming.""I like it, Papa, but it's kind of scary. Everybody looks so gloomy.""They are scared, Poppy. It is the Dimming. Don't forget that. Even though the flessen can't see the glowlights it doesn't mean we are always safe. If they get close enough they can smell us, and even see the heat your body produces.""Will they come?" She noticed he constantly glimpsed at the sky."Not to Rocky Bluff, Sylia. As long as we keep it cold, we'll be fine.""Why, Papa?""Because they don't come here.""Why?"Kaspin reached down and scooped her into his arms. "Because they don't like little girls that always ask why.""You're silly, Papa." Kaspin tickled her neck. She giggled and said, "That's not right.""Because we are careful. You must learn to be careful, too. In the Dimming there can never be any fire. No heat at all. In the day it doesn't matter. Do you remember the saying?"She didn't respond."Days cook," he said prompting her.Sylia chanted in the tempo and timbre that Master Ogden taught her: Days cook, days brightDays see, days sightDark moon, dark nightCold hearth, cold light "Cold light!" Sylia said. "It's the glowlings!"

About the Author

Michael R Stute lives in the rain forest of the Cerro Azul Mountains of Panamá in an off-grid home powered only by the sun and wind. Fortunately there are two suns in his life that warm his days. The first is the normal one that travels about fifteen degrees an hour from east to west, disappearing at night. The second, far brighter, more brilliant, fiery as a nova, and just as life-giving is the love of his life, Jena, with whom he lives along with their twin children, four cats, a dog and millions of things that make noise in the night.
