These are strange tales and some of them bite. There are sadistic mermaids, screaming statues, poison gardens, grumpy barmen and sarcastic cats - to name but a few of the book's inhabitants. Some stories are funny, some are horrific and quite a few are both at the same time. Sometimes characters die, sometimes they change, and sometimes they are changed. A lot of the stories have happy endings, though most of such stories must have losers too: all happy endings are relative.
