It was getting close to the end of the summer, and they wanted to end it doing something exciting. Roger looked at his friends and said that he remembered hearing about a party they could go to. It was for the guy who was going to be the school's new senior quarterback that year. Roger said his name was Victor and that the party was going to be at the old abandoned house on the top of Wishing Widow Hill that is where the party was going to be and also where Victor was going to be moving to Roger said. It was to be at eight o'clock that same night. As the friends were deciding whether to go to the party, Monika said, "Well, what time is it now?""It's six," said Paul."We have two hours," Duke said. "Let's get ready to party!"Roger stood up, pumped his fist in the air and shouted, "It's party time!"Mandy spoke up, saying, "But everybody is just going to be getting wasted and acting stupid.""That's the point," Kyle said with a laugh. "We're not only going to get intoxicated; we're going for the hot chicks as well."Jamie walked over to him and punched him on the arm. "Don't call us that." Kendra asked when they were going to leave. She also wanted to know who was getting the beer. Paul said he would volunteer to get the beer. Duke laughed at him, asking how he was going to get beer when he wasn't twenty-one and didn't have a fake ID.Two hours later, they all arrived at the party, and as they were walking along the pathway, Duke was so pumped up that he didn't see the beer in Paul's hand at first. Duke shook his head and said to Paul, "I knew you couldn't get the beer."Paul said, "It's in my hand, dumb ass."Oh," Duke replied.Robert tripped over a dog and stumbled to the ground. As he looked up at the ferocious dog, he saw a red glow in its eyes. He looked at Duke, asking him if he had just seen the same glow.Duke said, "What are you talking about?"Robert did not want to appear stupid, so he just said that maybe the fall dislodged his brain for a second. He jumped to his feet. When they reached the door to the house Duke was too busy helping Roger up, as he looked at everyone else and said, "Well, someone knock on the door. I want to party before it ends."Paul knocked on the door, and someone soon welcomed the friends into the house. Paul separated from the group to put the beer away so it would stay cold. As he was doing so, a young vixen walked up to him. Paul said, "Hi, how are you doing? I've never seen you around here before." He asked her what her name was.She said, "It's Jazmin. I'm one of Victor's friends."Paul asked if she wanted a beer."No, thank you," she said.Robert came barging over, saying that the party was awesome and wanting to know where the bathroom was.Paul rolled his eyes at his friend and said, "I don't know, but I think I saw it over there by the living room. Please go bother someone else."A few hours later, Robert was again waiting by the bathroom door. As he was waiting, he saw a book sitting there. When he went to pick it up, he saw the dog from the pathway. "Oh, you scared the shit out of me." The dog started to growl, displaying his sharp teeth, and his eyes started to glow red. Robert snatched the book and ran out of the house yelling.Duke said to Paul, "Oh, fuck, did you see who that was?"Paul laughed and said, "Yeah! That was Robert; let's get out of here before he causes a bigger scene." He scoped the room; people were looking in their direction.Kendra looked at her friends and said, "Let's just get out of here and go home. I'm getting tired of this party anyway."Robert had tripped over a bush when he ran outside. His friends found him and got him into one of the vehicles. Jamie rode in the backseat of Dukes car with him, as she was doing so she noticed he had a book in his hand. She confronted him about where he got the book. He told her that he'd found it at the party. She asked him why he took something that didn't belong to him. He said that he didn't do it on purpose; it just seemed strange at the time when he picked it up. In addition, when he opened it, he saw a weird candle inside of it, along with some writing."Well, what does it say?" Jamie replied.Robert opened the book. "It says, `The ones who lights the candle and reads this passage will be cursed by his fears of nightmares in hell.'" However when they tried to make out what the words said, although they could not clearly read the words because they did not have the candle lit. Jamie looked at him and said that they would talk about the whole book situation the next day and that he needed to give the book back to Victor also. He looked at her and said that once he was ok about the whole spooky book thing then he would give it back. That night the guys had slept over at Paul's house, and the girls went to Monika's that night. They all had meet up the next morning and hung out until that afternoon. Suddenly Robert remembered the book he'd found at the party the night before. He grabbed the book and told his friends that he was going to head home for the day.Just before he left the house, Jamie walked over to him and asked him why he was leaving so early. He told her that he wanted to get more information about the book he'd found. She looked at him if he were acting stupid and said, "You don't really think there is something spooky about this book?" She then confronted him about the fact that he was supposed to be giving the book back to Victor, and that he wasn't needing to think about some dumb book that can curse people. He then said well we also agreed to check it out before giving it back also Jamie then confirmed her answer she responded to the night before. However she told him she wanted him to promise her to give the book back when he was finished. She then asked him what he would do with it if he did find something wrong with the book.CHAPTER 2THE CURSE OF THE BOOKRobert said, "I don't know. Just let me check it out."When Robert got home, he went upstairs to put the book in his room and to take a shower. Later that night, after he'd eaten dinner, he went to his room and picked up the book. Opening it, he saw the candle on the left-hand side. He picked it up and set it down; he then turned a couple of pages. He came to a page that read, "He who dares to light the candle of doom and read on will be cursed with voodoo and his worst fears in hell, and his friends and family will suffer the pain of the beloved." Thinking the words were bogus, he turned the page. On the following page, the writing and the words were hard to make out, so he figured that he would try it again the next morning. He put the book in his backpack and got his stuff together for school the following day. When he was getting ready to leave for school the next morning, Paul called him. "Hey, man, you left in a hurry, yesterday afternoon. What happened?""Oh, nothing. I just needed to get home and get some things done," Robert replied.Paul said, "All right. I'll see you at school."When Robert pulled into the parking lot of the school, he saw all his friends gathered in a group. However, not saying a word, he just walked past them as quickly as he could so he could get to his locker to hide the book. When he reached his locker, he saw Monika at hers, which was located next to his. He nervously tried to put his stuff in his locker, but he ended up dropping it."Why are you acting so weird?" she asked him as he finally fit everything inside. "And why are you sweating?" He didn't answer; he just turned and left.A week went by, and he did not talk to anyone. He was very absorbed in the book, and he decided that Friday he was going to find out what the full message meant and where the book could have come from. While driving around town Friday after school, he came across a small bookstore within the neighborhood of Wishing Widow Hill. He parked and got out of his car. When he entered the bookstore, he saw an old woman. He showed her the book, telling her about the writing in the book and asking if it could have any meaning. He also inquired as to what the candle might be for and what it was doing in the book. The woman introduced herself as Malinda and then asked Robert where he got the book."I found it at a party that I went to with my friends. Why?"The old woman replied, "Take it back to where you found it.Robert said, "Why? Can't you help me?"The woman wouldn't respond, so Robert went back to his car and kept driving to search for answers about the mysterious book. He came to a town named Brook Hallow Ville. It was quiet there, with not much to see. He wanted answers about the book, so he kept driving along the dusty road. He passed an old shack, and then a little bookstore came into sight. When he walked inside the store, he saw an older woman. He asked if he could get help with a book that he had found. She said that it depended on what kind of book it was, adding that there were many types of books to choose from in her store. He replied, "This book isn't an ordinary book. It says it can curse people and endanger lives.""Let me see the book," she said. When he handed it to her, she looked at it and asked him where he got it. He told her that he lived in the town of Salem and that he found it in a neighborhood called Wishing Widow Hill. The women looked at him seriously, saying, "This was originally the devil's handbook. It was created by a Roman devil. He used it to put curses and nightmares upon anyone who disobeyed the devil at any time. After he was defeated, one of his thieves must have kept it and stored it away for all these centuries. Anyone who reads this will be in great danger; do not mess around with this. You need to get rid of this book as soon as possible."Robert laughed and said, "I wanted you to tell me the truth, not to try to scare me."Later that night when he got home, he went to his room and decided to clean it. As he was organizing some things, he came across the book. He wanted to see what the deal was with the book, and not knowing the fear that it could bring him or anyone around him, he took a chance. He picked up the lighter that was sitting on his table in his room and then took the candle out of the book and lit it. Then the words appeared in bold on the page, then he started to read the passage that was on the front of the page: "In the wishes of hell are sorrows of death, which cloud the memory of evil upon your life and others' blood." Blowing the candle out, he decided to go over to Paul's house to see what everyone was doing that night.Arriving at Paul's house, he knocked on the door. Paul came to the door and opened it to let Robert inside the house. Robert saw Jamie sitting on the couch, so he walked over to her and started talking about the book. He asked her if she remembered the book he had found. She changed the subject and asked him where he had been the past week. Robert replied that he had been trying to find information about the book he had found. Jamie asked him why he was still carrying the book around, why he hadn't given it back. Robert didn't respond immediately, but he eventually said that he would give it back. They dropped the subject and sat around the living room table, talking about the week that had passed while they drank some beers and a bottle of Jaeger that Paul's dad had bought for them that night. At eleven thirty, Robert said to his friends, "All right, guys, I'm getting tired, so I'm heading home. I'll see you all tomorrow."As he got home and fell asleep not long after that he began to have a nightmare about his worst fear: spiders. The flames of hell were burning his body, and a raging dog was growling, its sharp teeth scaring him and biting his head off. In addition, he had a nightmare about another fear: jumping out of an airplane. The parachute did not open in time, and as his body hit the ground, it stiffened. The next day, Monika decided to go see if Robert wanted to hang out for a while. His mother answered the door, and Monika asked if she could go get Robert. When she knocked on his bedroom door, he didn't answer, so she opened the door. When she went to pull the covers off him, she saw how red his face was. It looked as if he had been suffocated."Hey, what's wrong?" Robert's mother asked, walking in the room and seeing Monika sobbing. Monika pointed to Roberts's bed. The widowed mother took one look and fell to her knees crying.Paul and the other friends pulled into Roberts's driveway because they had not heard from Monika and had decided to drive over there themselves. As they got out of their vehicles, there was a loud scream. The friends ran inside the house to see what was wrong. They hurried upstairs to Robert's room."What happened?" Duke said. Looking around the room, he saw Monika and Robert's mother. Duke asked his friends to help Robert's mom, adding that they needed to call 911. He said that he would talk to Monika. As his friends ushered Robert's mother from the room, he helped Monika off the floor and asked her what had happened. She told him that when she came to wake him up, he did not move, and then when she removed the covers from him, it looked as if someone threw him in a fire and as if dogs had bitten him. She pointed at his body.Duke said to Monika, "Let's go see if they called nine-one-one." When they got downstairs, Duke asked Paul if he'd made the call."Yeah," he said. "They said they would be here in five minutes."The ambulance arrived, and the friends waited for the EMTs to transport Robert to the hospital. As the EMTs were about to leave, the widowed mother said that she wanted to ride with them to the hospital. Roberts's mother was so shaken up that one of the EMTs said that it was not a good idea. The EMT said that one of his friends could ride with them to the hospital. Duke volunteered, and Kyle and Monika said that they would take Robert's mother to the hospital and meet up with them.Kyle, Monika, and the mother arrived at the hospital and saw the EMTs getting Robert out of the back and rushing him to the emergency room. As they were getting out of the vehicle, the mom said that she was going to go look for a bathroom.Monika and Kyle said okay, saying that they were going to go see if their other friends had made it there yet. Looking around outside, as Monika and Kyle were waiting around for their other friends they heard a commotion from inside. They went back inside to find a few cops fighting to keep Robert's mom out of the back while the doctors did some tests and tried to revive Robert. The other friends had indeed arrived at the hospital, and Jamie and Cassie had to go help the troubled woman before she got herself in trouble.A few minutes later, all the other friends were sitting in the waiting room, and while some were helping to calm Robert's mom, Duke was freaking out. He looked at his friends and said, "Man, I feel so bad because I was talking shit about how weird he's been acting lately. Do you all think I killed him?"Cassie replied, "We're all going through the same thing. I just hope everything will be okay."The doctor came out to the waiting room with a gloomy look upon his face. "I'm sorry, but your friend did not make it. We tried everything we possibly could; he is just not responding."Robert's mom started to cry so loudly that Monika had to escort her out of the waiting room.Duke yelled, "Man, this is bullshit! You cannot say there's nothing you can do to save my fucking friend. He's only seventeen years old!" Duke looked at the doctor with rage in his eyes and picked him up.Sniffling, Cassie pulled on Duke's arm. "Come on, Duke. He's in a better place now. We'll get through this, I promise."Duke dropped the doctor and started to walk out of the hospital, punching the wall in rage. Right before the group exited, however, the security guard grabbed Duke, throwing him to the ground. Monika and Cassie started to cry, and the others just shook their heads in disbelief.CHAPTER 3HELP FROM FRIENDSAs the cops took Duke to the police station, the friends followed to see how long they were going to hold him. The cop said that because he was a minor, he only had to be in there for a day. Paul tried to talk to the police officer, seeing if they had options and could get their friend out sooner. The police officer said, "Sorry, young man, but nice try."The friends left to go to Robert's mom's house. They had decided that the girls would spend the rest of the day helping Robert's mom get through the hard time she had been going through.During the drive, Jamie stuttered, "G-guys, remember that book Robert found?""What about it?" one of them asked her."When I talked to Robert the last time, he said there was something bizarre with that book, like some kind of voodoo. He said when he looked inside of it, it had some eerie candle and some writing about a curse. The doctor said he died of natural causes. It does not make sense to me. He was so young, and the way we found his body ... It just doesn't make any sense.""Stop making stuff up and get on with your life," someone said."We all miss Robert," said another, "but we'll all have to figure out how to move on."
