From the Inside Flap

It came in this darkest of years, this winter of bitterest cold, when dire wolves loped feverish-mad through the city, marauding, laying slaughter and waste upon man, woman, and child. When finally they retreated, it was believed to be a miracle from God. It was not.--Journal of Sir Myron Chalstain

From the Back Cover

"Kill him!" a man roared from across the cobbled expanse. A riot of Isle men hauled past. "Move!" he roared, his sky blue eyes, gleaming. Lord Taschgart. Turning, he froze suddenly in terror, standing atop a destroyed monument, his gaze riveted to the north. The demon emerged into the square, burning rock and molten metal falling. Its gaze met Lord Taschgart's and locked on, as it started toward him. Lord Taschgart broke and ran. I didn't blame him.
