Annie Martin's life is uprooted as she leaves the only home she's ever known, St Benedict's Convent and Orphanage in the village of Cordoniz, CO, and takes up employment at La Morada, the home of young widower Ricardo Marquez. The house, isolated in the Galisteo Basin near Santa Fe, NM, has seen its share of death, and Annie discovers at least one of her new colleagues believes it also has its share of ghosts. Quickly becoming confidante to Senor Marquez, Annie learns of his unhappy marriage, his wife's death, and worst of all, his belief that his late wife is haunting him through nightly visitations. Unsure what to believe or how she might help him, Annie begins to unravel a dark web of events at whose center lies an unforgivable crime, an appalling cover-up, and a subsequent disruption of the spheres which define life and death.
