Gardens of Agony tells the story of Asef-Alus, a man with no head, as he tries to convince the inhabitants of a small medieval town controlled by a mysterious king that no one has ever seen to escape and follow him to the Carnival in the Abyss. Asef-Alus persuades five people to come with him: the Hag, the Child, the Torturer, the Idiot, and Hermes Trismegistus. Along the way they learn the true identity of the king, encounter the ghost of Uther Pendragon in the desert, and meet a man who hangs upside down and speaks by regurgitating jewels. As Asef-Alus’ motivation becomes increasingly suspect, the town’s inhabitants ultimately learn that the Carnival in the Abyss is not at all what they thought it would be.
