Herbert West - Reanimator

While this story is often regarded as Lovecraft's worst story, it was the basis for the movie RE-ANIMATOR, so it can't be all bad. On top of that, this story introduced Miskatonic University, so it has that going for it, too. Lovecraft wrote the story as a parody of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. It's one of the early stories to feature zombies as scientifically reanimated corpses. So the real question you need to ask yourself is this: If this story is arguably Lovecraft's worst, can you handle it? Well, can ya?

About the Author

If you're looking up this story, you don't need an intro to Howard Phillips Lovecraft, but in case you stumbled in here by accident, he was a writer who lived from 1890-1937. He created the Cthulu mythos and invited other writers to use his creations including Yog-Soggoth and the Necronomicon. He is one of the grandmasters of horror literature, and his influence is still strong in the field.
