Welcome to Elswence, the Otherworld of Faery, where magic and hedonism abound, and the fair-elves of Tylwyth Tewyn have enjoyed an idyllic existence for millennia … Nolly's desire for Alyn threatens to render his relationship with Arnica asunder, while Alyn himself feels a pull toward Phelis, the clan's Simplist and sister of Dennet, banished to the larger world for his crimes against Nolly and Arnica. After he accidentally activates a portal, Dennet finds himself transported to Byd Dynol, the human world, where he meets a second hanner-annwfn, Elwen, the daughter of a human chieftain, and Gwyddon, a learned Druid. In the meantime, Pussywillow and Dickson continue to mature so rapidly that Sycele fears for her children's well-being, while Meryell has second thoughts with regard to her defection to the sorceress Maleisus, despite her affection for one of the goblinlike creatures in the sorceress's employ. Faerian Cannaid, a defector to the realm, manages to soften the heart of Beirniad, Clan Tewyn's cranky elder mother, who still refuses to put her faith in Nolly as the Champion of the Otherworld. Return again to Elswence and cross the threshold of a world where passions run high in every regard, and whose otherworldly existence is threatened by greed, revenge, and a lust for power.
