In this world, magic doesn't last forever. Irulen is a detective mage prone to debauchery and getting himself into trouble. When he is called to a sleepy, snow-capped village in the north to investigate a string of ritualistic murders, he meets Farah, a sheltered yet spirited barmaid. Farah’s friend is already dead, and signs point that she may be next. Irulen races against time to find a sadistic killer. But is this mystery just the beginning? Is their meeting a calling to their greater destinies? Or are Irulen and Farah being lured into the design of something much more diabolical?
