It is the story of a young boy, his friend, his family, and his community that are attacked by bats during the annual Orange County fair. It's also a story about hobos and human nature. The story is intended to frighten, scare, disgust, and startle the reader and should be interpreted as a metaphor for the larger fears in everyday life.
