About the Author

Mayne Reid was an Irish American novelist and the author of adventure tales in a similar vein to Robert Louis Stevenson. Born in 1818, he wrote nearly seventy-five novels that became favorites of a wide range of readers, including future president Theodore Roosevelt and author Vladimir Nabokov. The Headless Horseman was among his most well-known works. Reid died in London, at the age of 65, in 1883.
