A small New Jersey beach town has a secret. Marigold Burnside, or Mari, is a reporter on Historical Homicides, which features notorious crimes from the past. Cape Alden, a sleepy town on the southern edge of the Jersey shore, earned its spot on the cable crime channel’s top ten show because of the murder of Charlotte Johnson, a young, pregnant woman who was savagely slaughtered in her beach cottage. Mari has come to Cape Alden to do research. As she’s driving to the site of the murder, she is involved in a terrible car accident that leaves her with two things – a severe head injury and an ability to see ghosts. Soon, it becomes apparent that these ghosts are following her. One, in particular, that of a middle-aged woman dressed in vintage clothing, is determined to get Mari’s attention. As she recovers from her injuries, Mari begins to do what she does best – investigate the death of an unsung young woman who died a terrible death.Whispers in the Dark was previously published as What She Deserved.
