From Booklist
Evil corporate giant Blackwell Industries’ research experiments are causing a famine at the Mexico-Arizona border. More and more, “coyote” Diego Busqueda has been called on to lead border crossers through the unforgiving stretch of desert called Devil’s Highway and into the American dream. While he’s away, the local crime kingpin sets his sights on Diego’s family. Things come to a head, and the family has to flee, leaving Diego to lead them through the Devil’s Highway, where they come face-to-face with the ancient and hungry evil that Blackwell has woken. While the plot progression of this graphic novel is straightforward enough, the juxtaposition of such disparate elements as werewolves, illegal immigration, and corporate greed infuses this gritty tale with thick social commentary. Lapinski’s dynamic and stylized art features refined line work, sharp contrast, and a duotone palette that illustrates not only the sweltering heat but also the rising panic in the story. An intriguing look at a high-profile issue. A Spanish-language edition (9781936393121) is also available. --Tina Coleman
