From a small town in present-day Wisconsin, the community functions plainly and lives quietly. Brandon, a young man with sisters and parents, a girlfriend and best friends, and undeniable proclivity for favorable outcome, is conditioned to do well in the world. On the verge of high-school graduation, however, the boy is kidnapped. An otherworldly series of gruesome, powerful, and strangely beautiful events stand in the way of his return home. The boy escapes a tyrant's grasp, falls into myriad wonders of an ancient kingdom, discovers some truth of his cell makeup, and eventually ventures out on his own to unveil the path that will lead him home. Through these experiences the reader will meet many new characters, and while the focus begins with Brandon, it inevitably shifts as the plot spirals outward. Those gifted with sorcery and insight become vital to Brandon's progress early on. While most seem to be trustworthy, he remains somewhat dubious. Rogue mages and warriors inadvertently stitch themselves into the fold, creating conflict and aid simultaneously. Meanwhile, his family and friends are left to cope with his untraceable disappearance, as the dynamics of their relationships shift and creak at the slightest sign of unrest. His parents battle the outlook of hope, each of his sisters find themselves compromised in their young adulthood, his girlfriend loses faith, and his best friends take a plunge into dangerous territory. What would you do to get back to the ones you love?
