Rabbit Doubt-a mobile phone game-has taken Japan by storm. In it, players are rabbits who must uncover the wolf in rabbit's clothing before falling prey to its mistrust-sowing wiles...as well as its teeth. When a group of teen players decides to meet offline for fun, the last thing they expect is to lose consciousness and wake up trapped in an abandoned building, mysterious bar codes tattooed on their bodies, and a corpse strung up in front of them. To stay alive and find a way out, they have but one option-to sniff out the lying wolf in their midst. Will these virtual acquaintances be able to pull it together in the real world and figure out what's going on in time to avoid ending up as the wolf's dinner?
From Booklist
After playing against one another several times in the online game Rabbit Doubt, a group of players meet up in real time, only to find themselves kidnapped and trapped in a series of locked rooms and forced to play Rabbit Doubt for real. Now they have become the rabbits of the game and must discover which player is the “wolf” and kill him before he kills them. This conceit is a common enough setup in recent horror fare, but here it is executed well. The story gets off to a quick start with the first player’s death in chapter one. The tension then quickly builds as one character after another is suspected of being the wolf, each accusation as plausible as the next. The artist’s interesting use of screentones to create layers of shadows, and the cliff-hangers at the end of each chapter that drive the pace add to the gruesome death scenes, creating a feeling of suspense and dread throughout the story. Readers who are easily spooked might do well to read this double-length volume with the lights on. Grades 9-12. --Eva Volin
