They don't want to hurt you. Because they remember what's it's like — normal times, when things were different, when they were just like you. But it hurts to be them. God, does it ever hurt. Bad enough to claw, bite, scratch, eat, kill away the pain... James should be dead by now. Instead, he awakens from the sound of gunshots, and the faces of camouflaged paratroopers in his bedroom window. The world, as James knew it, is gone and to make matters worse, something grows inside of him, making it hard to breath, hard to keep going. James knows what he must do to get rid of it, but for that he’ll need to do unthinkable things, which means becoming the very thing that hunts in the night. To live, he must not only travel outside the barricades. He must also see what they see, feel the pain they feel. James peers into the bottomless black well of the universe, and the black well peers right back.
