When her beloved 41 year-old father, a Merchant ship's Captain is reported 'missing at Sea', Jenny O'Reilly loses her place in the World. She spins round herself a protective un-feeling cocoon and languishes for weeks and months in a condition of absolute torpor. Alarmed by her unhealthy retreat her mother and sister take her across the Sea to visit their Tyrolean relatives, hoping a new and strange place will shake or shock her back to her feelings. And so it does; it works so well they follow with a fantastic journey through Italy to complete the cure. When they return to their New England home Jenny is quite whole again. And yet there's something different...a queer radiance which emanates when she's left quite alone, particularly when she walks along the shorelines. Soon she studies Painting and excels in creating exotic, mesmerizing canvases of the Sea. And finally...during her studies at the University of Berkeley in California she meets a man at a Halloween costume party who comes dressed as the Devil.
