The Hum

Jeannie doesn't belong at the frat party-sticky floors, sour air, a chaos of drunk kids chasing oblivion-but Layla and Daphne drag her anyway, promising fun she doesn't want. The house breathes, its walls groaning under the weight of spilled beer and bad decisions, and a low, gravelly hum buzzes under her boots, a pulse nobody else hears. She's always been the outsider, sketching in the margins of life since Tara's basement days faded to silence, but tonight's different. Shadows stretch too long, the air thickens with something wrong, and then there's Caleb-frat-boy loud, all charm and winks, his pine-scent grin hiding a darkness that prickles her spine. He sees her, really sees her, and that hum kicks up, threading through the noise like a warning she can't shake. But it doesn't stop at the party. The hum follows her-down dim streets where streetlights flicker, into her dorm where the walls creak like they're whispering, out into a world that's starting to crack. Shadows slip, voices echo too long, and Jeannie's cynicism, her armor, begins to fray as the hum digs deeper, a sound that's alive, ancient, and hers. Caleb circles back, too smooth, too knowing, pulling her toward answers she's not ready for. Is it the town unraveling, a beast waking under the skin of reality, or just her own buried ghosts clawing out? In a haze of neon drinks, peeling paint, and fleeting glances, Jeannie's about to find out: the hum isn't just noise. It's a call, and it's been waiting for her all along.
