“The earth is more yielding.” I was told with great glee, “Far more than they’d admit to, some people can’t see. They think all has been taken, but the earth holds the key, It gives when ready, like some mighty blue sea.” Strange things had happened in the small village of New Cross. Its small church had once been a place where ancient Roman Gods had congregated. The village was an old place and the village folk had been brought up to know that angels, demons and long-lost spirits would often walk the fields at night. James and Catherine’s unsuspecting parents move the family to New Cross on the approach to Christmas and it doesn’t take the children long to learn that their new home was built in a very odd place indeed. During the shortest of British days, unexpected and dangerous events unfold amidst the village’s twitching net curtains. James and Catherine become aware that something in New Cross has drawn them into an ancient battle, they discover that beneath the village is the entrance to a place so old that its true meaning has long since been forgotten. Inside that place is a truth that people will do anything to get at, the meaning of The Coin, the Raven and the Beat of the Drum.
