The elders spoke of something terrible happening in the past. They spoke of an ominous fog descending on the moor. Then villagers heard a muted bell ringing in the distance. They reported seeing shadow-like shapes moving in the fog. The shapes appeared for a second and then vanished into the white blanket that covered everything. They said the movement was so rapid a mind barely had time to register the presence of danger before it was dead. The elders warned anyone who will listen that sometimes hidden in the fog are the creatures called Devil’s Mares. These creatures follow the blanket of fog even when it enters the village. Hidden in the shroud of white they stalk and attack anyone they come across. Originally I thought the elders were telling tales to tourists for the occasional pint of beer. That was until the attacks began again. Within days most of the villagers fled to larger towns away from the moor. The few of us who remained in the village made a pledge to rid ourselves of the creatures or die trying. This is the record of events after the far bell sounded cross the moor. It is also a warning; if on a foggy evening you hear the muted ringing of a far off bell, beware! The Devil’s Mare is about to hunt.
