New Jersey. Mid-nineteenth century. William Petrie has been the faithful caretaker to the Van Marlow family for twenty-five years. But now, only one of that family survives--the "old man" Henry Van Marlow. He is eccentric, irritable--and growing more so each day, it seems. The old man's erratic behavior has William wondering how much longer he can endure being there. Until one day a startling, terrifying series of events happen, plunging the caretaker into a nightmare of murder, ghostly visitations, and horror so frightening that it will haunt him the rest of his life, as he discovers the ghastly secrets of Van Marlow Mansion.
