A short Halloween story set in a small Mid-West town. Two brothers attempt to uncover the secret of Halloween. The story begins....Why thirteen? The question had no real answer, at least far as Alan was able to uncover. His English teacher had taught him all about the importance of knowing the five “W’s”…. Who, What, Where, Why and When. He had no definitive answer for any of them. He knew “Where”, sort of, that being right here in his personal nightmare, his hometown, aka the middle of nowhere. A place he couldn’t wait to leave… a place he would leave the day he turned eighteen. He sort of knew “When.” It happened every Halloween, but no one knew exactly what time it would happen. It happened every October 31, could it be that simple 31… 13? Just a few transposed digits? The thought would have amused him, if the question had not had such a profound impact on his life. “Who”? It could be him, for all he knew. It would be a male age thirteen from his hometown, that much was sure. The answers to what and why were much less clear. He’d heard many answers, all different, and all lies, as far as he was concerned. If he had learned anything in these past twelve-plus years, it was this. Adults lie.
