An age old tradition of both young and old alike, “the Ghost Story” has provided campfire entertainment since before recorded time. Sometimes these tales are meant to be scary, other times they’re meant to provide the comfort of a dearly departed loved one. But one thing they always have in common, is that they are, first and foremost, about people―some of those people just happen to be dead. This tiny collection of short stories is meant to be easily read (or perhaps read aloud) in a single sitting. These stories are simply that: stories. They aren’t meant to be scary. The only thing these tales have in common is that they occur during Halloween, and ghosts happen to make an appearance. The first tale, “Out of the Rain,” is a story of a young woman who takes shelter from a driving storm in an unexpected place. The second tale, “The Ghost in the Kitchen,” tells the story of a nine-year-old boy, and the mysterious visitor that appears one night in the downstairs kitchen. The third tale, “The Strange Tale of Top Hat Jack,” recounts the events when a teenage boy takes an unexpected trip to “the other side,” where things may―or may not―be exactly as they seem.
